Tube tops are ALWAYS a bad fashion choice. Let's make this simple and talk about eye line. Eye line is a photography term referring to the path that your eye naturally takes when looking at a picture. Different pictures have different eye lines based on composition and such. The same concept can be applied vision and thus to fashion.
Horizontal elements create horizontal eye lines. This makes you look wider. Vertical elements create vertical eye lines, making you look longer. So, look at what the tube top does:
They create a horizontal eye line, emphasizes hortizontal axis of your body. Since this line is at the level of your shoulders, it makes them look broader than they actually are.
Presto-chango! Now look! Just by adding silly little straps the eye line becomes vertical instead of horizontal. This emphasizes the vertical axis of the body. No more broad shoulders!
